Job Description

Position Summary

The Director of Counseling Services exists to shepherd the mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being of Bryan College students through excellent clinical care grounded in a biblical understanding of human flourishing. This leader builds and oversees a counseling center that integrates the realities of the Gospel with evidence-based clinical practice, creating a space where students experience compassionate, competent care that honors both the complexity of the human condition and the hope found in Christ.

This is a twelve-month position. The Counseling Center is closed from mid-May through mid-August. During the summer, the Director works a hybrid schedule, rehiring staff as necessary, planning for the coming academic year, and attending relevant institutional meetings.

Reports to: Executive Director of Student Success

Education Required

  • Master’s degree (M.A.) in counseling
  • Additional credentials
    • LPC – Licensed in the State of Tennessee or ability to become Licensed
    • MHSP – Mental Health Service Provider
    • Qualified Clinical Supervisor (preferred)

 Required

Master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.

Active licensure in Tennessee (e.g., LPC/MHSP, LMFT, LCSW, or Licensed Psychologist).

Minimum of two to three years of post-licensure clinical experience.

Demonstrated management or leadership experience

A mature, Christ-centered faith and the ability to articulate and integrate the Gospel within a clinical counseling context.

Commitment to ethical practice and multicultural competence.

Openness to exploring how emerging technologies, including AI, can ethically enhance clinical workflows, student outreach, and administrative efficiency within the counseling center.

 Preferred

Active Approved Supervisor credential with the state of Tennessee to supervise post-graduate counselors seeking licensure.

Experience with crisis management and suicide prevention frameworks.

Training in evidence-based modalities (e.g., CBT, DBT, ACT).

Competency with EHR/EMR systems such as Titanium or Medicat.

Active participation within the professional field of counseling with organizations such as TLPCA, ACA, etc.

Duties

COUNSELING AND SOUL CARE

The Director maintains an active caseload of students, particularly those presenting with complex or high-risk concerns, and ensures every student seeking services receives a timely, clinically appropriate response. This includes assessing mental health needs, determining appropriate levels of care, and developing a network of clinical therapists for referrals when needs exceed the center’s scope.

Integrate faith and clinical practice in a manner that is both theologically grounded and clinically responsible, reflecting Bryan’s distinctly Christian mission.

Maintain proficiency with Titanium (EMR Software) and ensure appropriate clinical documentation across the center.

Manage client scheduling, matching students with counselors based on areas of expertise and clinical fit.

Remain current with ethical codes (e.g., ACA) and Tennessee licensure regulations, ensuring full compliance in services delivered and documentation maintained.

Develop preventative wellness programming across campus.

Manage the departmental budget, staffing, and resource allocation.

Serve as a resource for faculty and staff navigating student concerns.

 LEADERSHIP AND CULTURE

The Director is responsible for cultivating a healthy, caring, and Gospel-centered work environment within the Counseling Center. This person sets the tone for how the team relates to one another and to the students they serve, fostering a culture of mutual encouragement, clinical excellence, and Christ-like humility.

Provide strategic direction for Counseling Services in alignment with Bryan’s mission and institutional goals.

Train staff in counseling best practices, documentation, ethical decision-making, and interdepartmental collaboration.

Maintain and develop internship agreements with graduate-level programs.

Prepare reports and communicate outcomes to senior leadership.

Exercise strong organizational skills with attention to detail and an ability to work independently.

 STUDENT LIFE AND SUCCESS TEAMS

The Director partners closely with the Student Life and Success teams to promote holistic student formation. This includes shared work in student retention, crisis response, and campus-wide initiatives that reflect a unified commitment to student flourishing.

Provide on-call support and consult for crisis response as part of campus-wide student care initiatives

Contribute to shared projects in student retention and persistence.

Cultivate a collaborative, team-first ethos in mutual partnership with Student Life and Success colleagues.

The Director also partners with the Christian Formation team to facilitate and plan breakout chapels and other psychoeducational programming. This reflects Bryan’s conviction that equipping students with tools for mental, emotional, and spiritual health is integral to their holistic formation in Christ.

 SUPERVISION

The Director directly manages the Counseling Services team (e.g., part-time counselors) providing clinical supervision to counseling staff, interns, and trainees, and ensures that individual and center-wide responsibilities are completed with excellence and accountability.

The Director carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with institutional policies and applicable laws, including training employees, planning and directing work, and collaborating with the Executive Director of Student Success on hiring, performance management, and problem resolution.
