Job Description

Job Function: Wisconsin State Fair Park Police Department Dispatcher performs a full range of telephone and radio operational duties. The police dispatcher is the first line of communication a caller has and plays a key role in ensuring emergency personnel respond appropriately to a scene.

Major Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Specific Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Dispatching of Police, Fire, and Medical Personnel when requested by callers or State Fair Staff
  • Enters data related to calls into the computer-Aided Dispatch system (CAD)
  • Answers the phone and talks with callers in order to determine the nature of a particular emergency
  • Decides on a plan of action and summons officers to react
  • Coordinates the efforts of officers while in route to the scene
  • Calms and reassures people who are waiting on emergency services
  • Records/documents relating to a particular incident for possible use of later investigations
  • Advises individuals of certain actions to take while waiting for help to arrive
  • Contact other agencies if additional assistance is needed by direction of supervisory staff
  • Communicate with officers on scene in order to ensure that a situation or incident is fully resolved
  • Tracks the location of officers responding to a particular call/incident
  • Answers non-emergency call for assistance
  • Receives requests for information regarding vehicle registration, driving records and warrants, provides pertinent data
  • Operates a variety of communications equipment, including radio consoles, telephones and computer systems
  • Monitors and operate multiple police radio frequencies
Required Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Have the capacity to meet certification requirements as a TIME system operator.
  • Ability to remain calm while under extreme pressure
  • Ability to direct others and provide sound guidance
  • Understands basic police responses to an emergency scene
  • Understands department rules and regulations
  • Has excellent listening skills
  • Has the ability to multitask
Equipment Used:
  • Police radio console, portable radios, telephones, computer and key board, printers, copy machine and other office related equipment.
Education and Employment Requirements:
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED
  • United States Citizen and legal resident of the State of Wisconsin
  • No felony convictions
  • Be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment
  • Must be of excellent moral character
  • Must work ALL 11 days of the annual Wisconsin State Fair (Shifts to include Days/Nights)
  • Must work weekends during the State Fair and other events
  • Pass a background investigation conducted by the Police Department
Work Environment:
  • Police dispatchers work indoors in an office like setting that is nonetheless very stressful. The police dispatcher is required to work long shifts that may span 12 hours or more during an emergency or during the annual State Fair. Dispatchers report to a Dispatch Supervisor via chain of command structure.
Physical and Dexterity Requirements:
  • Requires sedentary work that involves sitting for long periods of time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time and requires continual use of a computer keyboard and other peripheral devices.
